This story of the City General is told by the hospital staff themselves - Ray interviewed many of the staff who were interested in various aspects of the Hospital's history and activities.

The programme has three sections: Firstly, we are taken on a guided tour of the hospital site in 1988 charting its growth in buildings and services from the mediaeval hospital of St.Loy on that site, to its days as the Stoke-on-Trent Workhouse from 1842 - to the busy "general hospital" it became in 1875.

The fast disappearing remaining buildings, rooms and facilities from the early days are captured here on film. Then we hear comments from many hospital staff doctors, nurses and other workers past and present of how things had changed over the decades, together with some personal stores and anecdotes - some going back to pre NHS days.
