Leek & Manifold Valley Light Railway: Parts 1 and 2

£14.99

The Leek & Manifold Valley Light Railway ran from 1904 to 1934 - one of the earliest narrow gauge lines to be constructed under the Light Railways Act of 1896. It was built to serve the isolated farming communities of the Staffordshire Moorlands - providing easier access to the market town of Leek. It was also popular with tourists, who rode its narrow gauge to explore Staffordshire's "Little Switzerland". Modelled on the Barsi Light Railway in India, its colonial style locomotives and rolling stock ran 8.25 miles on a 2'6" gauge line from Waterhouses to Hulme End. Contemporary documents, official plans and newspaper reports are here combined with photographs and commissioned illustrations to recreate the excitement and controversy raised by the construction of this unique railway, which brought a colonial flavour to the banks of the rivers Hamps and Manifold.
