Sir Stanley Matthews - The Story of the Statue
This is the story behind the Sir Stanley Matthews statue at
the Britannia Stadium. It is the largest football statue in
the UK.
We follow the process from first clay to casting at the
foundry to final unveiling – celebrating the career of Sir
Stan along the way. Sculptors Andy Edwards, Carl Payne and
Julian Jeffrey explain their aims and hopes for the statues.
BBC Radio Stoke football commentator Nigel Johnson explains
its importance for the Sir Stanley Matthews Foundation.
At the unveiling, there are interviews with Sir Stan’s
daughter Jean Gough, plus interviews with Kevin Keegan, Nick
Hancock and Mark Fisher MP.
In addition, there is a close look at many items of Sir
Stan’s personal memorabilia before they were auctioned off
at the Britannia Stadium. Expert John Cross gives us a
guided tour of the collection – the last time the items
were all together before being auctioned and split.
And there are personal reminiscences from Sir Stan’s
friend - Sentinel photographer Huston Spratt – who shows
us many of his own personal photos of Sir Stan.
